'A great deal of women, when they would like to maintain an effective situation, wear a gown. Everyone wears a dress,' he says. 'And suddenly, she's in a suit. Therefore I think there have been people watching saying, “Oh, you know what, I could possibly look feminine and powerful and se-xy all at one time - I was able to wear Michael Kors Australia Sydney."' The suit out of stock overnight, globally. 'Fifteen years ago, there were still distinct borders popular, and that's all gone,' he says, making reference to the impact of a social-media universe where everybody is a fashion critic and likes on Instagram is often as crucial as shoots in glossy magazines. Fifteen in the past, remarkably, he was only opening his first store, in Ny. He now has 509 stores worldwide, 13 of them in britain and Ireland, including a whole new Sloane Street branch in the uk. Seven more will open here next season, including a Regent Street flagship at the begining of 2016.

Kors grew up in Merrick, Long Island, a suburban town outside The Big Apple. He was interested in style from the start, he says, as well as at 5 years old advised his mother, Joan - a former Revlon model - on the bridal gown for her second marriage, coaxing her away from frills in favour of any more streamlined and flattering style. 'Even in that age, I knew the woman should wear the gown, not another way round,' he says. The numerous women in their family were a big influence in the development of this conceit. 'It was slightly just like a Fellini or even an Almodóvar film within my family,' he laughs. 'I was flanked by these quite strong women, and they all had different fashion perspectives. 'My mum was very understated, while my grandmother was over-the-top and glamorous,' he recalls. 'I had one aunt who has been very bohemian, and the other aunt who had been a full-on se-x-bomb [she apparently wore a bikini to his bar mitzvah]. And So I saw that when people place the right thing on, that they had somewhat of a spring inside their step.'

Being a teenager, he regularly ventured in to the city, chilling out at Studio 54, that was frequented with the fashion crowd like the iconic Vogue editor Diana Vreeland and writers for example Truman Capote. He began studying design at New York's prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology, but dropped out before graduation to produce his own collection. In the cut-throat arena of New York fashion, that takes some serious self-belief, I believe that. 'I was sure of myself. I knew the things i liked and that i outleydney a few things i wanted,' he nods. 'At the same time frame I needed not a clue about the mechanics of fashion, having said that i knew the kind of stuff that I wanted to create, and that i knew the type of woman I needed to create for. I didn't start scared about whether or not it would work,' he says. 'When I play the game, I understand I wish to win.'

Fifteen years ago, there were distinct borders in fashion, and that's all gone. His confidence paid off. At 22, his first collection was bought by New York's most glamorous Michael Kors wallet Australia, Bergdorf Goodman, and championed by Anna Wintour, then fashion editor at The Big Apple magazine. His first catwalk show came three years later, and he spent several years as creative director on the French fashion house Céline before opening his first stand-alone store on New York's Madison Avenue in 2000. He unveiled the diffusion and accessories line Michael Michael Kors in 2004 - a similar year he joined the hit television show Project Runway like a judge - and two years later launched a store selling accessories and homeware. Today, even he seems to come up with himself being a brand - 'That's very Michael Kors,' he says on several occasions.
